BEIRUT – ILO Director-General Guy Ryder will address the opening of the 42nd Arab Labour Conference in Kuwait on 19 April.

Ryder is set to meet with Kuwait’s Minister of Social Affairs and Labour and Minister of State for Planning and Development Affairs Hind al-Subaih, Arab Labour Organisation Director General Ahmad Luqman, and other Arab labour ministers participating in the conference.

This year’s event, held by the Arab Labour Organization (ALO) from 18-25 April, marks the 50th anniversary of the ALO. It will focus on social dialogue under the heading “Embodiment of Solidarity for Development and Employment.”

Improving mechanisms for social dialogue in the Arab region is underlined by the ILO as a requirement and a significant tool for addressing labour challenges, realizing fundamental principles and rights at work by all, creating decent jobs and extending social protection.

In the Arab states, the ILO promotes social dialogue to help in modernizing national labour legislation, raising capacities of labour administration, strengthening worker and employer organizations, and promoting gender equality, amongst other objectives. Strong, representative, independent and professional employers’ and workers’ organizations, as well as functioning public institutions, are key conditions for effective social dialogue. Common national goals and objectives will always encourage social partners to move dialogue forward.

The ILO and the ALO convened the first Arab Regional Conference on Social Dialogue in 2010, which aimed at building new -and bolstering existing -national frameworks for achieving productive and inclusive economic growth based on policies that are agreed upon through free and effective social dialogue.

ILO Director General Guy Ryder previously participated in the 40th Session of the Arab Labour Conference held in Algiers in 2013.

The annual event brings together delegates from 22 Arab countries to discuss labour issues and policy responses.

The ILO and ALO have a long history of cooperation in the Arab region, dating back some four decades, and the two agencies signed a Memorandum of Understanding in 2007.
