Seminar: Changes ahead in labour regulations for Jordanian businesses sourcing and selling agro-products

ILO and CBI hold seminar on regulatory frameworks, occupational safety and health measures, business policies and structures to provide safe and decent work in Jordan’s agriculture sector.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries (CBI), funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, held a virtual seminar on Wednesday (December 9), to discuss changes in labour regulation for Jordanian businesses sourcing and selling agro-products.

The seminar brought together representatives of agro-businesses, agro-sector associations and key stakeholders. It focused on three areas which are key to improving productivity, exports and decent work in the country’s agricultural sector. These include:
  1. New regulatory frameworks and occupational safety and health measures
  2. Insight to challenges of decent work in the agricultural sector
  3. Strengthening business policies and structures to provide safe and decent work in the agricultural sector
The event highlighted key findings from an ILO study which provides an overview of national legislation governing the agricultural sector as well as empirical evidence on the state of decent work on the farm level.

It also allowed for an exchange between employers and stakeholders on the procedures and measures currently in place to support workers, as well as challenges they face in addressing some of the decent work deficits in the sector, including ways to improve occupational safety and health on farms.

The seminar is part of joint efforts by the ILO and CBI to boost decent working conditions for farm workers and improve export opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to foreign markets, particularly to Europe.
