UN in China celebrates its 75th anniversary

Beijing (ILO News) – The UN day on October 24 is celebrated every year to mark the entry into force of the UN Charter. This year was no exception, despite the very difficult circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under the slogan “ 2020 and Beyond - sharing our future together”, the UN in China came together with representatives of the Chinese government, social partners, diplomatic corps, private sector, and national and international organizations to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Organisation.

In her opening remarks, the UN Resident Coordinator ad interim in China, Amakobe Sande, called for global solidarity to beat the spread of the COVID-19 and build back better together. She took the opportunity to congratulate the World Food Programme, which was given this year’s Nobel Peace Prize for its continuous efforts to combat hunger. Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ma Zhaoxu, delivered a message expressing support to the UN.

Secretary-General António Guterres sent a video message urging all participants to “draw encouragement and inspiration from our achievements over the past seventy-five years and collaborate more closely than ever to achieve our common goals.”
