Validation workshop on the situation analysis for the Young Futuremakers Thailand project

A validation workshop on the situation analysis for the Young Futuremakers Thailand project was organized by the ILO in Bangkok on 30 March 2021. It provided an opportunity for key stakeholders to validate the main findings and provide strategic advice on the project approach and implementation.

The Young Futuremakers Thailand - Promoting Youth Employability project is implemented by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and is part of the Futuremakers by Standard Chartered initiative. It takes a systemic approach in supporting youth in the labour market, in particular disadvantaged young women and young persons with disabilities, by providing demand-led technical skills training, employability training, career guidance and job placements. Highlighting the relevance of the project, the Permanent Secretary of Labour, Mr Suthi Sukosol, stated that “promoting youth employment is key to overcoming labour market challenges in Thailand”. The project aligns with the government’s policy and the Ministry of Labour’s priorities to promote youth employment, as well as support the establishment of start-up, SMEs and gig businesses.

The situation analysis was conducted by the ILO in 2021 as input to the project inception phase and provided an overview of the labour market situation, legislation and programmes related to youth and persons with disabilities in Thailand, including in proposed geographic areas, and examined the needs of employers as well as sectoral employment trends in the socio-economic recovery phase of COVID-19.

On 30 March 2021, the ILO organized a validation workshop in Bangkok on the preliminary situation analysis for the Young Futuremakers Thailand project to validate the main findings and receive strategic advice on the project approach and implementation. Key stakeholders who attended the workshop included representatives from the Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, Employers’ Confederation of Thailand, workers’ organizations and other key organizations.

Following a presentation of the project and the main findings of the situation analysis by the ILO, the first session provided a platform for participants to share their initial feedback on the analysis, remaining knowledge gaps, and potential areas of project focus. The following sessions of the workshop focused on receiving participants’ advice on strategic areas and modalities for project implementation, including on (i) geographic focus and target group of the project, including outreach measures; (ii) demand-led technical skills training, soft skills training, and entrepreneurial skills training; and (iii) provision of employment services and engagement of employers’ and workers’ organizations for inclusive workplaces and employment opportunities. The advice and feedback received during the workshop are crucial to the design of project activities and project implementation.

The project aims to make a contribution to the employability of youth, particularly disadvantaged young women and young persons with disabilities, by equipping them with the skills and experiences needed for a transition towards employment, thereby increasing economic inclusion in the society.
