The 1st Steering Committee Meeting of the Project for Strengthening Workplace Compliance through Labour Inspection Guidance and Social Dialogue

The project aims to enhance compliance of workplaces with International Labour Standards and contribute to providing a decent working environment

ANKARA (ILO News) - The 1st Steering Committee Meeting of the Project for Strengthening Workplace Compliance through Labour Inspection Guidance and Social Dialogue was organized at the International Labour Organization (ILO) Türkiye Office with the participation of relevant stakeholders. The meeting discussed the activities implemented so far and those planned for the next six months within the project. The views and suggestions of social partners were also considered.

The meeting began with opening speeches by Yasser Ahmed Hassan, Director of the ILO Türkiye Office; Bekir AKTÜRK, Director of Directorate of Guidance and Inspection at the Ministry of Labour and Social Security; Melahat Güray, Program Manager at the European Union Delegation to Türkiye, and Associate Prof. Dr. Ömer Faruk CANTEKİN, Director of the Directorate General of External Relations and the European Union at the Ministry of Labour and Social Security.

Bekir Aktürk, the Director of the Directorate of Guidance and Inspection, which is the beneficiary institution of the project, stated, "Our relations with the International Labour Organization, with whom we have collaborated for over 50 years, are strengthening even more with the activities carried out within the scope of this project. With the Project for Strengthening Workplace Compliance through Labour Inspection Guidance and Social Dialogue, we aim to emphasize the preventive and guiding role of labour inspection, thus contributing to the creation of a decent working environment for both male and female workers. Our objective is to contribute to the protection of workers, increase the competitiveness of employers, and support the balanced socio-economic development of our country."

Yasser Ahmed Hassan, the Director of the ILO Office for Türkiye, which the implementing agency of the project, said he was glad to see the representatives of the tripartite constituents, the experts from several Ministries and partners. And he looks forward to working with all of them within the framework of this important project.

Hassan highlighted that the ILO Ankara Office is committed to provide the needed technical expertise for attaining the objectives of the decent work agenda in Türkiye. He stated, " The steering committee shall contribute to enhanced collaboration between all partners to build on the common interest of promoting fair and well-functioning workplace and a more competitive labour market as well. It will serve as a platform to agree on solutions on issues of key importance that, after all, have a great deal in common beyond a shared vision and interest."

During the meeting, Senior Project Coordinator Burcu Akça Hacıosmanoğlu provided information about the project, explained the progress of the project, and outlined the activities planned for the next six months, along with risks and mitigation measures.

The contributions of social partners were also received during the meeting. After receiving the opinions of representatives from TISK, TOBB, HAK-İŞ, and DİSK, participants' questions were answered, and their suggestions were considered.

About the Project

The project is being carried out with the aim of increasing the compliance of workplaces with International Labour Standards alongside national legislation, led by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security (MoLSS) Guidance and Inspection Presidency.

Financed by the European Union Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA-III), the "Strengthening Workplace Compliance through Labour Inspection Guidance and Social Dialogue" project aims to contribute to the increased compliance of workplaces with International Labour Standards and the establishment of a dignified working environment.

The project, financed under the European Union Instrument for Pre-Accession Financial Assistance - IPA III, started in March 2023 and will last for 36 months. The project primarily plans to enhance the institutional capacities of GIP and social stakeholders. Additionally, by strengthening guidance services, the project aims to increase awareness of dignified work and improve workplace compliance. The beneficiary groups of the project, conducted in Ankara, İstanbul, İzmir, Bursa, and Adana, include relevant MoLSS staff, confederations, chambers of commerce, artisan and trade chambers, SMEs, NGOs, employees, employers, and national and sectoral unions and employer organizations.
