Stakeholder Visit and Meetings were held in Ordu on the Elimination of Child Labour in Seasonal Hazelnut Harvesting
“An Integrated Model for the Elimination of Worst Forms of Child Labour (WFCL) in Seasonal Agriculture in Hazelnut Harvesting in Turkey Project” run by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and Ministry of Labour and Social Security reaches its 5-year in implementation. Project partners and stakeholders visited the project sites in Ordu and held a meeting to evaluate the progress of the project.
A delegation consisting of Ministry of Labour and Social Security Deputy Director General of Labour Şeref Kazancı, ILO Senior Program Officer Nejat Kocabay, Embassy of Netherlands 2nd Secretary Cees Van Beek, Matra & HR Projects Senior Officer Deniz Bezirgan, Ferrero Sustainability Projects Expert Phyllis Kong and Nestle Responsible Sourcing Manager Deniz Rabia Oğuz visited Ordu Governor Seddar Yavuz to exchange information about the project and its outcomes. Governor Yavuz informed the delegation on the developments in the temporary settlement areas for seasonal workers. Governor Yavuz highlighted the importance of the project to eliminate child labour and informed participants on how the government’s resources used on improving living and working conditions of seasonal workers.

Delegation visited the Uzunisa Social Support Centre where they received information on how the children of seasonal agriculture workers has been withdrawn/prevented from work in hazelnut fields and referred to education. Delegation also held a meeting with local stakeholders.

Efirli Social Support Centre is moving to Saraycık neighbourhood
Altınordu Municipality is also contributing to improve living and working conditions of seasonal workers. Ordu Governorate in collaboration with Altınordu Municipality designated 14 hectares land to build a social support centre for seasonal agricultural workers in Saraycık neighbourhood. Seasonal agricultural workers were welcomed to Saraycık for the first time and their children carried on their education and social activities in Turnasuyu Anatolian High School.
Delegation visited Ünye and Fatsa Social Support Centres on the second day of their visit.
Children prefer to have their music class in open air.
Altınordu Mayor Engin Tekintaş informed the delegation on newly established Saraycık temporary settlement area in his Office.
Children in Ünye Social Support Centre presented a folk dance performance to the delegation.

The overall objective of this project is to contribute elimination of worst forms of child labour (WFCL) in seasonal agriculture in line with the Turkish Government’s strategy drawn by the National Employment Strategy 2014-2023. A model has been developed through the Dutch Government and CAOBISCO funded “Elimination of Worst Forms of Child Labour in Seasonal Agriculture in Hazelnut Harvesting in Ordu” project in 2013 and 2014. The project aims at contributing to the withdrawal of children from work and prevention of at-risk children to be engaged in seasonal hazelnut agriculture. It will bring added value through the replication of the strategic intervention model in the different regions and contribute to a sustainable child labour monitoring mechanism in seasonal agriculture. The project will step up efforts to attain the goal of contributing to the policy making and efficient implementation on the elimination of WFCL in seasonal agriculture.
