Decent Jobs for Egypt’s Young People: Tackling the Challenge Together in Damietta
The "Decent Jobs for Egypt’s Young People (DJEP)– Tackling the Challenge in Damietta" is one-of-a-kind public private partnership enables the ILO Cairo Office and Egypt-Methanex to support Egypt’s Vision 2030 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030 through addressing decent work.
Project Background
The "Decent Jobs for Egypt’s Young People (DJEP)– Tackling the Challenge in Damietta" is one-of-a-kind public private partnership enables the ILO Cairo Office and Egypt- Methanex to support Egypt’s Vision 2030 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030 through addressing decent work.
The DJEP project aims to build on the wealth of experience and success of the ILO Canadian- funded DJEP project to create decent employment opportunities for youth in the governorate of Damietta, focusing on employment creation through promoting entrepreneurship and facilitating job matching processes. The project builds on strong partnerships and aims to institutionalize ILO youth employment interventions with national entities to ensure sustainability.
The ILO Project constitutes the core of the Methanex’s new Social Responsibility Programme in Egypt and aims to create decent employment opportunities for young women and men in the governorate of Damietta.
The Project builds capacities of key stakeholders within government institutions, employers, trade unions and civil society organizations to implement effective and sustainable youth employment interventions. Gender and women’s empowerment as well as inclusion of people with disability will be cross- cutting areas of the project. It also implements entrepreneurship promotion and business skills development interventions as well as facilitate job-matching processes.

Egypt Methanex
Methanex in Egypt operates a state-of-the-art methanol production facility located in Damietta, Egypt on the Mediterranean sea that is among the most energy efficient methanol plants in the world with a production capacity of 1.3 million tonnes of methanol per year, primarily supplying domestic and European markets.
Methanex in Egypt provides training and capacity building workshops to different groups within the Damietta community to enhance services provided and individuals’ living standards. Over the years Methanex in Egypt continued to support the community in Damietta by sponsoring annual capacity- building programmes in the Governorate of Damietta. These have included workshops on kindergarten teacher training, product development and marketing for income-generating projects, and strategic planning for NGOs. Empowerment & training, health and education are the main areas of contributions to Egypt Methanex.

Objectives and expected outcomes
The development objective of the project is to increase decent job opportunities for young women and men in the governorate of Damietta. The project will employ a multi-pronged approach to provide decent and productive work opportunities by building the skills of young women and men to generate more and better jobs through enterprise development, employability skills, job-matching services, as well as enhancing the capacities of local partners on the ground.
As cross-cutting themes the project will ensure to increase labour market accessibility for people with disabilities and use a gender sensitive programming approach to ensure women’s skills and employment outcomes are improved in both short term and long term employment prospects.

The outcomes are:
- Strengthened capacity of local government, employers, trade unions and civil society organizational partners to implement youth employment initiatives.
- Increased business start-ups and improved youth livelihoods through self-employment opportunities.
- Increased decent work job placements for young people through better labour market matching.
