African ministers call for ILO support to boost employment-intensive investments in infrastructure

Ministers from some 13 African countries at the 14th Regional Seminar for Labour Based Practitioners have called on the International Labour Organization (ILO) to boost its cooperation with other international partners to support employment-intensive investments in infrastructure and other sectors.

Communicating Labour Rights: A training course for media professionals of Africa

Some 15 African journalists attended a practical training - organized jointly by the ILO-ITC Training Center and the ILO Regional Office for Africa - on the relevance of international labour standards to increase responsible and accurate media reporting for better public understanding on labour and social development issues (Youth Employment, Social Protection, Skills Development, Women Economic Empowerment and gender Equality, etc.) Participants were also briefed on the 12th edition of the African Regional Meeting scheduled from 11-14 October in Johannesburg, South Africa. Journalists are now competing in the 2011 International Journalistic Prize "Media for Labour Rights

Global economic crisis opens up new space for discrimination at work, ILO says

In the new Global Report on Equality at Work 2011, the International Labour Office (ILO) notes that in spite of continuous positive advances in anti-discrimination legislation, the global economic and social crisis has led to a higher risk of discrimination against certain groups such as migrant labour.

Labour Law Reform: Capacity Building Workshop

The workshop stemmed from the Road Map of the tripartite Labour Law Reform Advisory Council which identified capacity building of stakeholders involved in the labour law reform process as a key element. The workshop was aimed at bringing stakeholders and labour law experts together to discuss and fuse areas of common interest and identify areas of difference in the labour law harmonization and reform process. The recommendations from the workshop together with the position papers from the tripartite partners will form the basis of further negotiations by the tripartite Labour Law Reform Advisory Council which has the mandate to guide the law reform process.

Tripartite Negotiating Forum Technical Committee Workshop

The Workshop was held at Carribea Bay, Kariba, Zimabbwe in line with the objectives of the ILO/UNDP Project on Strengthening of Social Dialogue and Tripartite Cooperation in Zimbabwe which is focused on the revival of the Tripartite Negotiating Forum (TNF). The meeting was held as a follow-up to the official launch of the Kadoma Declaration “Towards a shared national social and economic vision” by the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe on 26 February 2010.

First ILO participation to the World Economic Forum on Africa

The International Labour Organization (ILO) attended for the first time the 2011 World Economic Forum in Africa which convened more than 900 leader from government, private sector and civil society from 4 - 6 May in Cape Town, south Africa.

More than 150 High Level Representatives of Governments, Workers’ and Employers’ Organizations, and the civil society – gathered from 11-12 April 2011 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - adopted a comprehensive roadmap for the implementation of a Regional Strategy (hyperlink) for Employment for Peace in the Horn of Africa.
