  1. Omar Faruk Osman: “The ratification of ILO core Conventions means a lot for the Workers of Somalia”

    According to Omar Faruk Osman, the General Secretary of the Federation of Somali Trade Unions (FESTU), by ratifying ILO Core Conventions on Freedom of Association (No.87)and Collective Bargaining (No.98), Somali workers were given the legal right to organize and bargain collectively in accordance with the ILO core labour standards. In this interview, Mr Osman explained the role of trade unions in the implementation of these Conventions and the importance of social dialogue to improve Workers’ situation in Somalia.

  2. Durable Solutions for Somali refugee returnees through Repatriation, Assistance and Promoting Sustainable Livelihood

    The ILO Somalia is implementing a project aimed at providing durable Solutions for Somali refugee returnees through Sustainable Livelihoods. This durable solutions project will support the economic reintegration of spontaneous and/or facilitated group returns to Baidoa, through a diversified livelihood and community-based approach. This approach aims to establish conditions that will enable returnees and their communities to access their basic needs and restore their livelihoods with dignity.

  3. Child labour in Somaliland: A rapid assessment in Hargeisa, Burao and Borama

    This report presents findings from a rapid appraisal conducted in the Somaliland main cities of Hargeisa, Burao and Borama. The study sought to characterize the working children, establish the types of work that children engage in, determine the pathways into and causes of child labour, as well as establish the living and working conditions, and perceptions of the community on child labour.

    Somalia ratification of the ILO Convention No. 182 on the worst forms of child labour has now been formally registered. This brings the total number of ratification of Convention No. 182 to 179, out of 185 ILO Member States.
