Prospects for enhanced cooperation between the ILO and Qatar Chamber
Members of the ILO Bureau for Employers' Activities and the Qatar Chamber meet in Qatar to strengthen ties
A meeting was held in Qatar between the International Labour Organization (ILO), led by Deborah France Massin, Director of the ILO's Bureau for Employers' Activities (ACTEMP), and Mohamed Al Mohannad and Naser Al Meer, Employers' Representatives at the Qatar Chamber, to discuss ways of enhancing cooperation.
Amongst others, Al Meer suggested organising a high-level conference. This conference would provide an opportunity for the private sector to understand the support provided by the ILO to employers organizations, to recognise the achievements of both organisations and to explore possibilities for future cooperation. It was also highlighted that the Qatari private sector has successfully adapted to the labour and business laws enacted in recent years.
In her remarks, France-Massin expressed her enthusiasm for the proposed conference and emphasised the importance of cooperation and partnership with Qatar Chamber in areas such as research, technical training, occupational safety and health and SMEs development and the sharing of expertise from other countries.
The meeting was also attended by Jose Manuel Medina, Senior Specialist for Employers' Activities at the ILO Regional Office in Beirut and Max Tuñón, Head of the ILO Office in Doha. Medina stressed the willingness of Bureau of Employers’ Activities in supporting Qatar Chamber of Commerce on reinforcing the services provided to their members and addressing issues related to SMEs development, labour market skills, and policy advice and advocacy support at national level in line with national policies. Tuñón offers ILO support as well on the promotion of women's participation and the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the labour market.
Both sides agreed to establish a joint working team to plan and discuss the agenda and timing of the proposed conference.
