Leading the Movement to End GBVH in the world of work
In June 1999 government, employer and worker representatives from 189 countries came together at the International Labour Organization to adopt the world’s first treaty to prevent and address violence and harassment in the world of work, including gender-based violence and harassment. Convention 190 (C190) recognizes that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has the right to a world free from violence and harassment and sets forth the obligations of ILO members to guarantee this right. The Convention’s companion instrument, Recommendation 206, provides guidance to governments and employers’ and workers’ organizations about implementing C190’s inclusive, integrated and gender-responsive approach.
Fulfilling C190’s promise of a world free from GBVH requires bold action. In 2022, the ILO Office for the USA and Canada hosted a series of webinars in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Women’s Bureau. These events spotlighted action underway in the U.S. to at all levels of government, and by employers, unions, and worker advocates, to integrate C190’s approach and principles into initiatives to prevent and address GBVH in the world of work. These interactive webinars featured leaders from all groups.
This website builds on the momentum generated by those discussions and provides a host of resources for employers, governments and workers to continue to learn from one another to build best practices and to expand the movement to prevent and address GBVH in the world of work. The links also include ways to continue to engage with like-minded organizations and individuals to spur more impactful action.
