Coffee in Kenya: Some challenges for decent work

Providing work for 19% in the agriculture and forestry sector and 4% for total employment in the country (2001- 2005), the coffee estate sub-sector in Kenya is a relevant economic activity also in terms of income, tax revenue and foreign exchange earnings. The working paper introduces the coffee sector role in agriculture, its production trends, and its supply value chain to better understand its conditions and impacts on all aspects in Kenya. Decent works issues in the sector are analyzed according to labor relations and job quality at farm-level. Finally, the paper explores improvements in the sector to promote value addition and upgrading prospects from a sustainable development perspective.
