The meeting was opened by the President of Costa Rica, Abel Pacheco. In his keynote speech, he called for a broad and humanist approach to globalization. The Minister of Labour, Ovidio Pacheco was also present and addressed the meeting.
Some 200 registered participants attended the one-day policy dialogue, including high-level government, business and labour leaders, as well as representatives from research institutions, civil society organizations and the UN system.
Two panel discussions were held: one with academic experts on the impact of globalization on the economic and social systems of Costa Rica - and one with the social partners on the impact of globalization on labour life. The dialogue focused on the interaction of globalization with national development; the positive and negative aspects of globalization and how more people could reap its benefits, while controlling or compensating for its adverse consequences.
