Global South-South Development Expo 2012 Review

    14 January 2013

The Global South-South Development Expo 2012 took place from 19 to 23 November 2012 in Vienna, Austria and was hosted by UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization). This year’s theme was “Investing in Energy and Climate Change: Inclusive Partnerships for Sustainable Development”. The ILO organized a Solution Forum on Energy, Climate Change and Decent Work, showcasing development solutions from and for the Global South. The ILO Forum explored the link between employment, decent work and sustainable development strategies. The global economic crisis has positioned job-creation at the heart of policy-making priorities. At the same time, environmental degradation has called for increased efforts towards sustainable development. In this context, there was a clear need for correlating employment, the development of alternative energy sources and economic opportunities. The Forum shows why South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) strategies and mechanisms are vital for shaping the post-2015 sustainable world of work. The panellists presented their country’s experience in transitioning to a green economy, while highlighting the benefit of South-South cooperation by presenting country-specific solutions.

    The Post-2015 Development Agenda

    15 November 2012

The ILO is actively involved with the United Nations in support of country processes for defining the so called “post-2015 development framework” that will build on and complement the Millennium Development Goals. These initiatives include the work of the Task Team established by the UN Secretary-General under the leadership of the UN Development Group (UNDG), and the UNDG groups responsible for organizing thematic and national consultations. With UNDP, the ILO convened the first thematic consultation in Tokyo in May 2012, on the subject of “growth and employment”. In its recent discussion of the subject, the ILO Governing Body’s - governments, workers and employers gave a mandate to the ILO Director-General, Guy Ryder, to develop a strategy and provide support for ILO constituents to be fully involved in the agenda-setting processes.
