Strengthening Labour Market Analysis, Job Counselling and Matching Job Seekers with Opportunities through Job Centres

To start the process of strengthening employment services in selected centres in the aftermath of the tsunami.


Background

The tsunami caused extensive damage in the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry as well as in Andaman and nicobar Islands. As per initial estimates of a joint WB/ADB/UN assessment mission, 645,000 families in the four States and approximately 1.2 million workers, mainly in the informal economy were affected. Meetings with representatives of constituents on rehabilitation initiatives identified potential areas for collaborative activities in affected areas.

Objectives

To start the process of strengthening employment services in selected centres in the aftermath of the tsunami.

Strategy

The ILO and Ministry of Labor and Employment (GOI) have carried out a study and on the National E mployment Services in India. The study and its recommendations have been accepted. The project tests some of recommendations on a pilot basis.
