New Programme of Cooperation and OSH Day Seminar in Tashkent, Uzbekistan

The ILO and The ILO and Uzbekistan signed a Programme of Cooperation for 2005-06. The main areas of cooperation are employment, occupational safety and health, social protection and social dialogue.

The signing ceremony took place in Tashkent on the first day of the World Day on Safety and Health seminar (21-22 June 2004), in the presence of the Minister of Labour and Social Protection of the Population Akildzhan Abidov, Deputy Minister Batyr Alimukhamedov, Muzaffarbek Sabirov, Chairperson, Chamber of Commodity Producers and Entrepreneurs, Dilbar Dzhakhangirova, Chairperson, Council of Trade Union’s Federation over sixty experts from the Ministry, Labour Inspection, other inspections, trade unions and enterprises.

The Minister noted that adequate working conditions are of very high importance, especially in the countries of transition. All social partners need to strengthen the work to improve OSH. In the situation when the GDP is growing by 6 %, particularly the private sector need to pay attention to ensure safe and decent working conditions. The President has issued an order on 25 May that rights and working conditions for women workers has to be improved. The Minister observed that Uzbekistan has enough OSH laws and regulations, but the main problem is their implementation and adequate registration of accidents.

The second part of the event included a presentation on occupational accident and diseases compensation by Pauline Barrett-Reid, ILO Office Director, and a review of the Uzbek OSH situation related to international praxis by Wiking Husberg, Senior OSH Specialist. signed a Programme of Cooperation for 2005-06.
