International Women’s Day, Russian Federation

News | 08 March 2003

The 8th of March has been traditionally observed by the United Nations as International Women’s Day with special events around the globe. To commemorate this year’s event, the International Labour Organization (ILO) focused on women in the media who report on conflict, war, human and socio-economic rights and other important issues.

On 7 March 2003 the ILO Moscow office and the Ministry of Labour and Social Development of the Russian Federation organized a ceremony to award prominent women journalists writing on socio-economic issues in the Russian mass media. Ten journalists were awarded honorary diplomas and memorable presents on behalf of the ILO and the Ministry of Labour. Short biodata of nominees is in the attached booklet. The gathering was addressed by Ms. Pauline Barrett-Reid, Director of the ILO Moscow office, and Mr. Valery Yanvarev, First Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Development
