The role of social protection and employment promotion as viewed by the young people of Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan’s large young population can make a significant contribution to the country’s ambitious development plans. This report presents perception of more than 8,000 young people about social protection and employment promotion programmes which can be useful pointers to policy makers and development partners when designing such programmes.

One important survey finding is that the vast majority of young people think that the social protection system should be comprehensive enough to mitigate various risks throughout life, with strong links between the social protection services and employment programmes. Policies facilitating easy transition from education to employment are vital for Uzbekistan’s socio-economic development. This would require more interventions supporting those at a disadvantage in the labour market such as young women, rural youth, youth from low-income households and especially those who meet more than one of these criteria.
