    Uzbek cotton is free from systemic child labour and forced labour

    Almost two million people are recruited every year for the annual cotton harvest in Uzbekistan. The country has succeeded in eradicating systemic forced labour and systemic child labour during the 2021 cotton production cycle, according to new ILO findings.

  2. Uzbekistan: Government and the UN Conclude the First Joint Programme of the Joint SDG Fund

    The Government of Uzbekistan in partnership with the UN agencies concluded its first UN Joint Programme sponsored by the Joint SDG Fund. Three sister-agencies - the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) together with the Ministry of Finance reported on the achievements in the social protection system accomplished by the Programme in 2020-2022.

    Only half of the Uzbekistan’s population has access to at least one social protection scheme. The National Strategy for Social Protection sets out to increase the coverage and ensure adequacy of social protection for all. The video tells stories of ordinary people and how social protection is helping in various difficulties throughout lives and advocates for the extension.

    Olga Koulaeva, Director of the ILO Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, addressed an International Web Forum (in hybrid format) coinciding with the ratification by Uzbekistan of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, World Children’s Day and UNICEF’s 75th anniversary. The forum was organized by “Zamin” International Public Foundation in cooperation with the Government of Uzbekistan.
