Partnership with Local Government to Create New Income Streams for Subsistence Copra Communities
18 - 31 May 2011
Coconut farmers and women can now produce sugar, oil, soap and perfume products from coconut. This was after the Inter-agency Programme to Nurture Peace, Security and Decent Work through Local Development in Conflict Areas of the Philippines (Bondoc LED) and local government of San Narciso, Quezon conducted training in remote villages. A total of 70 coconut farmers and 56 women joined the training held on 18-31 May 2011 in Quezon. Participants learned sequential harvesting of coconut for copra and sap collection to increase productivity. Coconut-based products such as coconut sugar, virgin coconut oil, organic soap, and perfume were also produced.

ILO-Ifugao State University (IFSU) knowledge corner partnership

The International Labour Organization (ILO) opened knowledge corners in schools, universities, and public libraries in the Philippines. Through a partnership with the ILO and the Ifugao State University (IFSU), the first provincial knowledge corner was established on 18 May 2011 in the northern region of the Philippines.

Roundtable Discussion and Project Advisory Committee Meeting on Green Jobs Initiative

The roundtable discussion presented the ILO’s Green Jobs Initiative and discussed green jobs activities in the Philippines, including the role of government, employers’ and workers organizations. The roundtable discussion was followed by a Project Advisory Committee meeting, whose agenda were devoted entirely on the launching of the Green Jobs in Asia Project.

Mobile teachers educate "seasonal pupils"

Children from rural areas often skip classes, while some even have to drop out-of-school to help their families in farms during harvest seasons. The Department of Education (DepED) said that these child labourers, tagged as "seasonal pupils", can still be saved through accessible educational services.

Building Peer Support for Return Migrants

Former women migrants from the provinces of La Union, Nueva Ecija, Ilocos Sur and the National Capital Region attended a seminar-workshop recently in a purposive move to help themselves overcome negative migration experiences and hasten the readjustment and reintegration process.

Ilocos Sur to Set Up Task Force for Migrants
16 February 2011
Ilocos Sur Vice Governor Deogracias Victor Savellano expressed his support to setup a provincial task force that will deal with issues affecting migrant workers in the province. The task force will essentially provide assistance on return and reintegration of migrant workers.

Public Employment Service Office Managers' Training on Access to Phil-JobNet
15 February 2011
Training on the Phil-JobNet website to promote access to job opportunities. Phil-JobNet is an internet-based job and applicant matching system which aims to fast track jobseekers for job opportunities and employers search for manpower. It is the centralized-database facility of the Department of Labor and Employment.
