Partnership with Local Government to Create New Income Streams for Subsistence Copra Communities

Coconut farmers and women can now produce sugar, oil, soap and perfume products from coconut. This was after the Inter-agency Programme to Nurture Peace, Security and Decent Work through Local Development in Conflict Areas of the Philippines (Bondoc LED) and local government of San Narciso, Quezon conducted training in remote villages. A total of 70 coconut farmers and 56 women joined the training held on 18-31 May 2011 in Quezon. Participants learned sequential harvesting of coconut for copra and sap collection to increase productivity. Coconut-based products such as coconut sugar, virgin coconut oil, organic soap, and perfume were also produced.

The BHW in particular will have a “tour of duty” in assisting midwives and Municipal Health Office (MHO) staff in operating the birthing stations. The Inter-agency Programme to Nurture Peace, Security and Decent Work through Local Development in Conflict Areas of the Philippines (Bondoc LED) supports the construction of birthing stations. Barangay Health Workers and officials of the Provincial Health Office, Department of Health Region IV-A Extension Office and the Municipal Health Office of Unisan, Quezon are expected to join the training.
