Decent Work and the Millennium Development Goals

Decent Work is crucial for the Philippines to achieve UN-defined Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Four objectives – employment opportunities, rights at work, social protection and social dialogue – lay a foundation for building a better, more secure world.

Recognizing that decent and productive work for all is central to addressing poverty and hunger, member States pushed for Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 1 to include indicators on employment: full and productive employment and decent work for all, including women and young people. Another employment-related indicator is included under MDG 3: promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. The ILO ensures that employment indicators are included in national and international labour market monitoring systems to draw attention to work required to achieve decent work in participating countries.
