HANOI (ILO News) – The ILO in Viet Nam and the Germany Agency for International Co-operation (GIZ) have agreed to join forces to provide more effective support to the Vietnamese Government in the areas of mutual interests.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by ILO Viet Nam Director Chang-Hee Lee and GIZ Country Director Jasper Abramowski at the ILO office in Hanoi on 5 June.

The areas of cooperation include the reform of the technical vocational education and training (TVET) sector, enhancing the social dimension of green growth, and contributing to the strengthening of ASEAN integration from Viet Nam.

The MoU covers a period of two years until 2021 and can be further extended.

“I believe that the signing of this MoU will facilitate a more structured coordination between the two agencies. This will help identify more synergies and improve further the effectiveness of our collaboration,” said the head of ILO Viet Nam.

ILO Viet Nam’s Labour Economist Valentina Barcucci agreed, adding that: “If we come together and speak with a common voice, our voice will be louder”.

The GIZ Director also supported the vision that the cooperation between the ILO and GIZ will move beyond TVET to other areas. In TVET, the bilateral cooperation will focus on the revision of the Labour Code, support to Sector Skills Councils and Industry Advisory Boards, and other initiatives promoting public-private partnerships.

He indicated that areas of further collaboration could include the promotion of green growth, as well as in supporting Viet Nam to achieve and monitor the Sustainable Development Goals.
