    Safety and health at work: Hopes and challenges in development cooperation

    The project "Improving safety and health at work through a Decent Work agenda" was developed to better address safety and health at work as a vital component of decent work and ran between 2010 and 2012. The brochure aims to raise awareness on occupational safety and health issues among the development cooperation community and provide information about the project. It also highlights some successes of the project that could be replicated in other countries.

    Promoting Fire Safety in Bangladesh's Garment Factories

    In March 2013 the tripartite constituents of the ILO - government, employers and workers - developed a National Tripartite Plan of Action on Fire Safety for the Ready-Made Garment Sector in Bangladesh. It came about after two devastating fires at ready-made garment factories in 2012 and early 2013 killed 120 workers and injured many others. One of the activities in the Plan of Action, is to develop and deliver mass worker education tools, such as this video, to promote safety and health in the ready-made garments sector.

    ILO welcomes Bangladesh safety accord, but urges respect of labour laws

    ILO's Deputy Director-General for Field Operations, Gilbert Houngbo, welcomed the Bangladesh Accord on Building and Fire Safety but said additional issues such as labour laws, freedom of association and collective bargaining must be respected. Speaking on CNN's World Business Today, Mr Houngbo concluded that action should be taken now, "to make sure we are not just talking the talk, but walking the walk".

    Clothing retailer workplace safety agreement a "breakthrough", says ILO

    Major clothing retailers have agreed to sign a workplace safety agreement, in an effort to avoid future tragedies such as the collapse of the Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh, where over a thousand garment workers lost their lives. Mr. Ryder told CNBC's "Squawk Box" that the agreement, which addresses worker safety and health issues, is a breakthrough, but is only part of the answer.

    CBC news reports on the ILO visit to Dhaka to meet with government, workers and employers organizations following the collapse of the Rana Plaza building, which resulted in deaths and serious injury of hundreds of garment workers. Speaking at a press conference, the ILO's Deputy Director-General for Field Operations, Gilbert Houngbo, described Bangladesh as a victim of its own success with rapid manufacturing growth creating the need for a new "modus operandi".

    The challenge is for concrete action to be taken now, said the ILO's Deputy Director-General for Field Operations, Gilbert Houngbo in a live interview from Dhaka, with Al Jazeera English Newshour. This will include passing a new labour law in Bangladesh, inspecting over 3500 factories, and importantly, creating a different working environment, where workers, employer and government are in dialogue to prevent any such future tragedies.

    ILO's Deputy Director General for Field Operations, Gilbert Houngbo, pushes for reforms in Bangladesh on freedom of association and collective bargaining to ensure that individuals "do have possibility to negotiate better working conditions" in the field of labour. Mr. Huongbo, in an interview with BBC World News, emphasises the need for reform of labour laws in Bangladesh at the highest levels of government, to make sure that changes will be adopted quickly.

    ILO's Director General says "Everything can be done to change the situation" in Bangladesh

    The Bangladesh disaster will happen again "if action is not taken now", affirmed ILO's Director General Guy Ryder. Mr. Ryder, speaking to CNN's Richard Quest, urged authorities to take action for necessary measures. While everybody has a role to play in making these changes happen, it is "in the governments capacity" to implement a plan that will adopt a legislation in the field of labour.

    The ILO's high-level mission to Bangladesh is pressing the Government to take action that will improve the working conditions of the garment business that makes up 80% of the country's $24 billion export industry. ILO's Deputy Director General for Field Operations, Gilbert Houngbo, told BBC World Business Report that there is a "need for much higher political commitment" and the root causes can be accounted to the need for labour law, freedom of association, and collective bargaining among the field of labour.

    Beating the Dust Disease in Thailand

    An estimate of 200,000 workers are at risk of developing pneumoconiosis in Thailand. ILO’s Senior Specialist in Occupational Safety and Health, Dr. Igor Fedotov says, “It would not be an exaggeration to say that millions are at risk around the world” and these cases are often being unreported. With the help of the ILO, however, the Thai Ministry of Health has increased the number of skilled doctors to treat and support workers diagnosed with the lung disease, making Thailand a leader among developing economies.

This video gives an overview of the successes reached in these countries, leading to safe and healthy, decent workplace for all.

    The equivalent of four plane crashes each and every day. This is how many people go out to work each day and don't return home because they die in a workplace accident. Thousands more die of work-related diseases. But these accidents and illnesses are preventable. Coordinated action at national and enterprise level is improving workplace safety and health, as well as directly benefiting business productivity, cost-saving and competitiveness. The EU and the ILO's programme on Safety and Health at Work and the environment SafeWork have engaged in a joint project to improve safety and health at work in five countries across three regions of the world: Honduras, Malawi, The Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, and Zambia. The successes reached in these countries can be replicated around the world, leading to safe and healthy, decent workplaces for all.

    Manual for training trainers of enterprises

    This training manual is aimed at enterprises to implement HIV prevention programmes for their employees and their family members. This tool, of assistance to trainers to conduct programmes to educate their co- workers and also to train peer educators, provides guidelines on developing Workplace HIV/AIDS policies and programmes and will also help the management and workers to develop a supportive environment conducive to behaviour change and protection from HIV.

    Good Practices in Labour Inspection on HIV and AIDS

    This publication is a set of good practices on labour inspection with respect to HIV and AIDS which was prepared jointly by the LAB/ADMIN and the ILO Programme on HIV/AIDS and the World of Work (ILO/AIDS). It is a tool for labour inspectors, workers and employers to improve their understanding about the linkages between labour inspection and HIV and AIDS.

    Knowledge, attitudes and practices on HIV and AIDS among manufacturing industry workers in Honduras

    This study was conducted by the ILO and the UNAH-VS, in partnership with UNAIDS, the Honduran Manufacturers Association and ASONAPVSIDAH. The objective is to identify the level of knowledge, attitudes, and practices relative to HIV and AIDS among the workers of six companies in the manufacturing industry located in Villanueva and Choloma of the Cortés Region.

    This study was conducted by the ILO, with the support of the OFID, in collaboration with UNAH-VS, UNAIDS, ENP, SITRAENP, and ASONAPVSIDAH. The objective is to ascertain the level of knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding HIV and AIDS among the workforce of the National Port Authority (ENP), and the dock workers employed at Puerto Cortés.

By monitoring severe weather, a project implemented by the International Labour Organization is helping protect farmers from the worst effects of climate change, and insuring those most at risk.
