Workshop to prepare for a Sector Study in Nepal (ECLM project)

A Workshop was held in Kathmandu from Aug 29 – Sep 2 2016 in the context of the project "Assessing the economic contribution of labour migration in developing countries as countries of destination" (ECLM). The workshop was organised in collaboration with a team of researchers from Social Science Baha, and discussed the implementation of a study of the manufacturing and trade sectors. The agenda for the workshop can be downloaded below.

The workshop was the second event in Nepal for the EU-funded ECLM project, which is jointly implemented by the OECD Development Centre and the ILO, following the National Consultation Seminar held in this country on 1 December 2015. Built upon the support from the stakeholders who participated in the seminar, the research team for the sector study will study the economic impacts of immigration in the two sectors.

During the workshop, the main instruments for data collection in the manufacturing and trade sectors were discussed in detail and tested in the field. The instruments will be used to conduct stakeholder interviews, focus group discussions and interviews with companies active in manufacturing and trade. The study aims to provide an overview of migrant workers in these sectors in Nepal and to analyse why the economic contribution of migrant workers in these sectors might be different from the contribution of native workers. Similar studies are planned in several other countries covered by the ECLM project.
