Workshop to prepare for a Sector Study in Ghana (ECLM project)

A Workshop was held in Accra from May 3-7 in the context of the project "Assessing the economic contribution of labour migration in developing countries as countries of destination" (ECLM). The Workshop was organized in collaboration with the Centre for Migration Studies (University of Ghana), and discussed the implementation of a study of the mining and trade sectors. The agenda for the workshop can be downloaded below.

The Workshop was the second event in Ghana for the EU-funded ECLM project, following the Consultation Seminar held in this country on 26 May 2015. The seminar brought together a team of researchers from the Centre for Migration Studies (University of Ghana) and the ECLM project, which is jointly implemented by the ILO and the OECD Development Centre.

During the workshop, the main instruments for data collection in the mining and trade sectors were discussed in detail and tested in the field. The instruments will be used to conduct stakeholder interviews, focus group discussions and interviews with companies active in mining and trade. The study aims to provide an overview of migrant workers in these sectors in Ghana and to analyse why the economic contribution of migrant workers in these sectors might be different from the contribution of native workers. Similar studies are planned in several other countries covered by the ECLM project.
