Tripartite workshop on green jobs promotion held in Mexico City
More than 60 representatives from government, employers’ and workers’ organisations, as well as from specialized and academic institutions attended the three day national workshop on Strategies for Sustainable Development and Green Jobs Creation.
Rodolfo Lacy, Deputy Secretary of Planning and Environmental Policy of the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) and Thomas Wissing, Director of the ILO for Mexico and Cuba, inaugurated the workshop on Wednesday, 23 July.
Led by ILO’s International Training Centre (ITC-ILO), the workshop created a space for learning and experience sharing. Overall objective was to discuss best practices and identify opportunities to promote green jobs creation in Mexico.
Wissing explained: "We want to strengthen institutional capacities to successfully integrate green jobs promotion into the national policy dialogue and work towards a transition to a more sustainable economy.”
According to Lacy, different challenges lie ahead, including for example the need for effective national environmental protection efforts and a change to sustainable production processes in traditional economic activities. Both areas strongly depend on human resources and skills development of workers.
These arguments were reinforced by an introductory panel with representatives from SEMARNAT, the Mexican Institute of Competitiveness, The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Delegation of the European Union to Mexico.
The intensive and fruitful discussions of the three day event ended with a commitment by the participants to continue working jointly on the developed ideas.
The workshop took place in the context of the Flemish funded project Decent Work in the Green Economy (2013-2014) implemented in Mexico, China and Turkey.
