  1. Brazil Expands Technical Cooperation Efforts with the ILO (Interview in Portuguese)

    The government of Brazil has signed a series of agreements with the ILO, Timor Leste, Haiti and the United States as part of its on-going efforts to promote technical cooperation between nations. The agreements include a Joint Declaration on Combating Child Labour, a project on Social Protection, a programme on Forced Labour and Green Jobs, and a programme to strengthen workers’ organizations capacity in Africa. The Brazilian government was represented, among others, by Mr Marco Farani, Director of the Brazilian Agency for Cooperation, ABC, and Mr Carlos Lupi, Minister of Labour and Employment.

He talks about the actions taken by the ILO and the Indian government, including efforts to converge ongoing government schemes to assist potential victims of bonded labour. Anil Swarup is the Director General (Labour Welfare) of the Indian Ministry of Labour and Employment.

    Driven by extreme poverty in their home countries, thousands of female migrant workers go each year to the Arab States in order to earn enough money to support their families. What they find there is sometimes not what they expected. A film directed by Carol Mansour and funded by Caritas Sweden, the Netherlands Embassy in Beirut and the ILO depicts the gamble these women take when they decide to leave their families and go to work in Lebanon.

    Living in a poor rural area of Moldova, 17-year old Maria grabbed the chance for a better life when a family friend promised her lucrative work abroad. Instead she found herself doing forced labour on a farm in Russia, with no passport or money to get back home. Breaking this cycle of human trafficking will involve improving decent work prospects for Moldavians at home, as ILO TV reports.
