ILO COOP 100 Symposium will be held on 16-17 November 2020

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of its Cooperatives Unit (COOP), the ILO is bringing together policy makers, researchers and practitioners working with cooperatives and the wider social and solidarity economy (SSE) for a two-day international symposium.

To mark the 100th anniversary of its Cooperatives Unit (COOP) , the ILO is holding an international symposium on November 16-17, 2020. Held virtually, the symposium will highlight the contribution of cooperatives and the wider social and solidarity economy (SSE) in advancing social justice, decent work and sustainable development. During the two-day virtual event, policy makers, researchers and practitioners will reflect on historical perspectives, legal and policy frameworks, measurement, management, sustainability, platform economy and future of work issues among others.

This Symposium will feature opening remarks from Guy Ryder, Director-General of the ILO and Ariel Guarco, President of International Cooperative Alliance (ICA). Two publications will be launched during the event, on the Statistics of Cooperatives and a virtual retrospective issue of Annals of Public and Cooperative Economics in partnership with COPAC and CIRIEC. Vic van Vuuren, Director of ILO Enterprises Department and Simel Esim, Manager of COOP Unit will deliver closing remarks.

This Symposium is a culmination of a call for papers , launched in July, 2020. By the deadline for submission (August 15), a total of 32 submissions were received from researchers in leading research centers and universities and practitioners in cooperatives and wider social and solidarity economy (SSE) organizations around the world.
