ILO and International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) Joint Conference on Cooperatives and the Future of Work

In commemoration of the ILO Centenary, the ILO and the ICA will co-organize a conference to reflect on the role of cooperatives in addressing key issues in the future of work and promoting decent work.

In the morning session, a new memorandum of understanding will be signed by the two organizations on a future partnership. A panel discussion will then be organized with representatives from governments, workers’ and employers’ organizations, the cooperative movement and UN agencies concerning the relevance of cooperatives in the context of the future of work debate.

In the afternoon session, an ILO and ICA joint book on “Cooperatives and the World of Work” (Routledge, 2019) will be presented by co-editors and co-authors. The topics to be covered in the session include: rural development and women empowerment through cooperatives; worker ownership and buyouts of enterprises; cooperatives of independent workers; and labour transformation and institutional re-arrangement.
