ILO Research Department Seminar

Global Supply Chains, employment and production systems

Upon the request of the ILO, IRES, in collaboration with a team of researchers from the University of Campinas (Brazil), started in 2016 a research project on the impact of GSCs on the production systems of France and Brazil. This project focuses on two sectors which play a major role in the two countries; aeronautics and the automobile. In early 2018, IRES delivered to the ILO a report based on a qualitative survey in both countries and available statistical data. This research allows us to question the current theoretical approaches in terms of GSCs, the business issues specific to both sectors and to assess their impacts on employment at the regional and national levels.

The aim of this seminar is to continue the debate. It will be organized in two thematic sessions which will involve researchers, academics, business and union leaders. Debates will be based on the report submitted to the ILO.

A first session on "Global Supply Chains, Technological Breakdowns and Employment" will discuss the possible changes in employment and working conditions at the time of Industry 4.0 and the mechanisms and actions taken by unions and management.

The second session will focus on the link between "Public policies and the integration into Global Supply Chains". What are the conditions for an upgrading (of countries, businesses and workers) through an integration into global value chains? What are the differences between developed and emerging countries?

A synthesis (in english) of the report: "The impact of global supply chains on employment and production systems: a Franco-Brazilian comparison of the aeronautic and automotive industries” is available here.
