Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: The SKILL-UP Ethiopia project organized a two-day workshop from August 29 to 30, 2019 on Skills for Trade and Economic Diversification (STED) approach for the garment sector in Addis Ababa. The workshop brought together representatives from government, employers’ association, textile and garment factory representatives, research organizations, development partners and others. The workshop was part of the ILO’s efforts to provide practical advice support for Ethiopia on providing the skills that industry needs to succeed and grow, and that workers need to get decent, productive jobs.

In his opening statement, Mr. Alexio Musindo, Director of the ILO Country Office for Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, stressed the importance of social dialogue in finding appropriate responses to the economy’s skills needs. The workshop purpose was to identify and anticipate the skills needs, to formulate recommendations to address them and to develop skills strategies for the sector.

A background study for the garments and textile sector in Ethiopia and an international study on skills, operation, management and productivity in the garment sector, were shared with the participants to give them an overview of the sector and show them good practices examples from international experiences. The workshop successfully obtained critical insights and a strong engagement from the participants by going through the key stages of STED diagnostic of the sector.

The recommendations of the participants would feed the skills strategy for the garment sector in Ethiopia.
