New ILO report reveals role of self–employment, small businesses in creating jobs

Media advisory | 07 October 2019
Self-employment and small businesses play a far more significant role in creating jobs than previously thought, according to a new ILO report. Using newly-collated data from 99 countries, the report looks at the contribution to total global employment of self-employment and businesses with less than 50 employees.

It includes recommendations for policy changes to ensure that these small economic units receive the support they need, that is also appropriate for their size and nature.

Small matters: Global evidence on contributions to employment by the self-employed, micro enterprises and SMEs, will be launched on Thursday 10 October at 20.00 GMT.

EMBARGO: The report and all associated materials are under strict embargo until Thursday 10 October at 20.00 GMT. Advance copies of the report will be available to recognised media on request from the morning of Thursday 10 October.
