Living in a poor rural area of Moldova, 17-year old Maria grabbed the chance for a better life when a family friend promised her lucrative work abroad. Instead she found herself doing forced labour on a farm in Russia, with no passport or money to get back home. Breaking this cycle of human trafficking will involve improving decent work prospects for Moldavians at home, as ILO TV reports.

Belgium continues partnership with ILO to extend social security and promote social dialogue

On 9 December 2008, the Minister of Development Cooperation of Belgium, Mr. Charles Michel, signed an agreement with the International Labour Office (ILO) for a new grant of €6 million and €2.4 respectively to extend social security to vulnerable populations and promote social dialogue in French-speaking Africa.

Failing financial institutions, frozen credit, volatile stock markets, mounting job losses, and painful cuts in wages are impacting the lives of struggling citizens worldwide. Speaking at the Centre for American Progress, in Washington D.C. (USA), Juan Somavia underlined how the decent work agenda can become a unifying factor in building a coordinated approach to the crisis. "We need a global strategy that can help hundreds of millions of families living in poverty here and around the world to move up new ladders of opportunity. The ILO’s Decent Work Agenda can be a foundation for a global new deal."
