  1. Youth unemployment crisis stuck until at least 2016, predicts the ILO

    ILO's Theodor Sparreboom, Senior Economist, presents the current youth unemployment rates, which at a global level, are stuck at 12,7%. The situation is worsening, especially in developed economies, where the average rate has not returned to pre-crisis levels. The ILO Global Employment Trends for Youth Report 2012 also warns of the dramatic deterioration of the labour situation for young people, who increaingly are employed in part-time and temporary jobs, as they have no other alternatives.

ILO TV interviews Craig Churchill, Team Leader of the ILO's Microinsurance Innovation Facility and Chair of the Microinsurance Network about the "Microinsurance Compendium, Protecting the Poor", co-published by the ILO and the Munich Re Foundation. Mr. Churchill describes why microinsurance plays a key role for low-income people to help them cope with risks and large losses. He also explains the reason for its success in Asia.

Despite short-term negative effects on North African economies, Ms. Schmidt describes the ILO's hope that the Arab Spring of 2011 will have a positive impact on labour markets in the long-term.

On this occasion the global cooperative community also marked the launch of the UN International Year of Cooperatives. Through a video message, ILO Director-General Juan Somavia addressed the opening session of the gathering.

  1. Risk of social unrest increases as deeper jobs recession looms

    Raymond Torres, Director of the ILO International Institute for Labour Studies, discusses the likelihood of a deeper global jobs recession in a grim analysis outlined in the World of Work report, issued by the ILO on the eve of the G20 leaders summit. The report projects that the global economy is on the verge of a new jobs recession that will further delay the global economic recovery and may ignite more social unrest in scores of countries.
