World Day Against Child Labour 2009 in Geneva

On Friday 12 June 2009, the ILO commemorated the World Day Against Child Labour with a an event organized jointly with the City of Geneva and the Geneva-based community organization "Le Respect" on the Place des Nations with the ILO Director-General Juan Somavia and US Senator Tom Harkin. This year’s World Day also marks the tenth anniversary of the adoption of ILO Convention No. 182 on the elimination of the worst forms of child labour.

Girls in Child Labour Top 100 Million

ILO expert Frank Hageman presents a new ILO report that despite recent progress in eliminating child labour which affects 218 million children globally, girls make up an estimated 100 million and more than half of them are under the age of 12. The report cites evidence that as a result of the economic crisis, more girls are kept out of school than boys with the result that they may enter the workforce at an early age.
