ILO Director-General to attend G20 labour ministers meeting

The G20 Labour and Employment Ministerial meeting will be hosted by Australia's Minister for Employment. It will be attended by Labour and Employment Ministers from G20 participant countries, the European Union and leading international organisations, including the ILO, the OECD, the IMF and the World Bank.

MELBOURNE – The Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Guy Ryder, will join the G20 Labour and Employment Ministerial Meeting (LEMM), during which the ILO will present a number of reports on employment issues that have been prepared to inform the Ministerial discussions.

The LEMM is taking place in Melbourne, Australia, from 9-11 September 2014.

On Tuesday 9 September at 14.00, the report “G20 labour markets: Outlook, key challenges and policy responses” will be launched at a press conference in the G20 LEMM Media Centre. The report was prepared for the first LEMM Ministerial session, on employment plans and growth strategies, scheduled to take place on Wednesday 19 September.

The report was written jointly by the ILO, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and the World Bank Group (WBG, and the press conference is expected to be given by Sandra Polaski, ILO Deputy Director-General for Policy, Nigel Twose, Senior Director, WBG, and Stefano Scarpetta, OECD Director, Employment, Labour and Social Affairs.

In addition, the ILO is contributing two further reports to inform the LEMM discussions; “Informality and the quality of employment in G20 countries” and “Creating Safe and Healthy Workplaces for All”.

A fourth report for the Meeting, “Achieving stronger growth by promoting a more gender-balanced economy” was jointly written by the ILO, the OECD, the WBG and the International Monetary Fund.

All the reports which the ILO has written or contributed to will be available on the website (www.ilo.org/g20) from 14.00 (Melbourne time), Tuesday 9 September 2014.
