Recommit to social dialogue in Europe, says ILO Director-General

Europe continues to struggle to attain real recovery, with growing inequality and unacceptably high levels of unemployment, said ILO Director-General, Guy Ryder, in an address to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Minimum wage policies, restoring collective bargaining and recommitting to the processes of social dialogue would help respond to these challenges, he said.

ILO Director-General Guy Ryder called on governments to work together "to start putting people back to work". Speaking on a panel at the Ford Foundation-ILO High level event, "Employment and Decent Work for Inclusive and Sustainable Development", Ryder also noted since young people are more likely to be unemployed than adults that apprenticeships were important to reduce the mismatch between what companies need and what education provides. The event included panels moderated by CNN's Richard Quest that included four Heads of State, the CEO of Coca Cola and the General Secretary of the ITUC.

Ban Ki-moon: Decent work for youth backbone of development

During his second visit to the ILO, UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, defined youth unemployment as an "epidemic" which represents a great test of our time. Mr Ban also stressed how the global youth unemployment situation is intolerable, and called for an increasing collaboration and cooperation on employment and entrepreneurship for youth.

Following the performance of the class choir and orchestra - Gabriel Peri School (France), ILO's Director-General, Guy Ryder, opened the International Steering Committee meeting of the International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC). He reminded the progress the ILO has made in the fight to eradicate the worst forms of child labour. ILO's Corinne Vargha (Branch Chief, Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work), Christina Behrendt (Social Policy Specialist) and Paula Montagner (Brazilian Ministry of Social Development) highlighted the importance of social protection in combating child labour.

Norovyn Altankhuyag of Monglia addressed the 103rd International Labour Conference in Geneva, as the first Prime Minister representing the Asian country at the ILO's annual Conference. While addressing the 103rd International Labour Conference, H.E. Mr Abdullah Ensour, Prime Minister of Jordan, stressed that political, social and economic reforms in his country constitute an ongoing process which need to be sustained by democratic consent. The Jordanian Government is convinced that the growth of the country's economy is conditional to the growth of the productivity of its labour force. Mr Ensour also called for the support of the international community to help the Kingdom in dealing with the consequences of the Syrian humanitarian crisis affecting Jordan.

The ILO's Director-General, Guy Ryder, presented a new publication on the recent achievements of the Organization's development cooperation, titled 'The ILO at Work: Development Results 2012-2013'. “This report is published at a time of major change in international development corporation, greater coherence between UN agencies and other development actors is being promoted, and has resulted in new ways of working and greater policy making in a one UN framework”, said Ryder during his presentation.

A joint ILO-UNCTAD publication, titled "Transforming Economies: Making industrial policy work for growth, jobs and development" was launched by the ILO's Director-General, Guy Ryder, and UNCTAD's Secretary General, Mukhisa Kituyi. The book presents 8 case studies of countries across the development spectrum, from sub-Saharan Africa to the United States. According to the authors the clear implication from those studies is that government has an essential role in the successful development.

ILO Director-General: Migrants must receive equal treatment in the labour market

Workers rights must be put at the centre of the agenda when it comes to dealing with migration. That’s the key message of the “Fair Migration” report presented to the International Labour Conference by Guy Ryder, Director-General of the ILO. Protecting local and migrant workers equally is the best way to reconcile social concerns and economic benefits, says Mr Ryder in an interview with ILO Radio.

ILO's Director-General opens 103rd Session of the International Labour Conference

Addressing more than 3,000 representatives of governments, employers and workers from 156 countries, ILO Director-General, Guy Ryder, officially opened the 103rd session of the International Labour Conference. Ryder urged delegates to place jobs at the front and centre of discussions, and called for strengthened actions to end forced labour. The ILO's Head also stressed the need to tackle the unacceptable treatment and abuse to which too many migrant workers are exposed worldwide.

While participating at the spring meetings of the 2014 IMF and World Bank, ILO's Director-General, Guy Ryder, pointed out that if pre-crisis trends in employment growth had continued, 62 million more women and men would have been working in 2013 when global unemployment reached 202 million. Unless growth picks up, the jobs gap will widen to 75 million by 2018.
