The goal of the workshop was to facilitate knowledge‐sharing and to inform international deliberations on governance aspects of international chemicals and waste management, by identifying good practices and lessons‐learned on a range of topics relevant to the beyond 2020 process of the Strategic Approach to International Chemical Management (SAICM).

The workshop brought together more than 60 experts from around the world, including governments, intergovernmental organizations, workers’ organisations, industry bodies, civil society organizations and academic institutions. Through presentations, panel discussions and working groups, participants concluded that a governance model that supports greater sectoral and stakeholder engagement will be key to successful implementation and achievement of targets. Full results of the workshop will be presented at the third Open‐ended Working Group (OEWG3, Montevideo, April 2019).

The ILO was pleased to be able to host and participate in this important and timely workshop as well as to engage in substantive discussions on governance issues related to international chemicals and waste management. ILO has been actively participating in inter-agency meetings and fully supports the dialogue on the way forward towards the 2020 goal and beyond, in the context of the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
