Participants at a meeting held 17 January at ILO headquarters in Geneva discussed entry points in the ILO Programme and Budget (P&B) for 2008-09 for advancing gender equality in the world of work. The meeting, which brought together some 35 representatives of ILO work units, was organized by the Bureau for Gender Equality.

Discussion focused on a joint immediate outcome in the P&B which is, "Increase capacity of constituents to develop integrated policies and programmes to advance gender equality in the world of work". The joint immediate outcome is one of a total of five in the P&B; the other four are: "Coherent economic and social policies in support of decent work", "Integrated policies for the informal economy" , "Strengthening labour inspection", and "Microfinance for decent work". The purpose of the outcomes is to address areas that require coordinated policies and draw from multiple technical fields.

Responsibility for implementing the outcome, which includes indicators and targets, rests with all ILO regional offices and with headquarters-based sectors. Two or more sectors and departments share lead responsibility for implementing the joint outcomes. Coordination for the outcome rests with the Bureau for Gender Equality.

Participants were briefed on ways the recently-revised ILO Gender Action Plan, which is aligned with the P&B 2008-09, relates to the joint immediate outcome on gender equality, including roles and responsibilities of management and staff. Programming requirements and implementation planning for the joint immediate outcome were also explained, and a discussion session questions and clarification concerning reporting on targets and indicators for the joint immediate outcomes, among other things.
