Partnership with Tokyo 2020

On 26 April 2018, the ILO and Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) signed a partnership agreement aimed at promoting sustainability through the Tokyo 2020 Games.

Partnership between Tokyo 2020 and the ILO  focuses on advancing socially responsible labour practices amongst the Games’ delivery partners (sponsors, suppliers, and licensees). Using the MNE Declaration as the guiding framework, the partnership envisages the following collaborative activities:
  • Raising awareness of the labour dimension of CSR through organization of events
  • Collection and dissemination of good practices amongst the Tokyo 2020 delivery partners on socially responsible labour practices
  • Organization of technical seminars
  • Development and dissemination of tools to support Games’ delivery partners in implementing socially responsible labour practices that realize the principles of the MNE Declaration.
TOKYO 2020 Sustainability Plan and accompanying Sustainable Procurement Code make explicit reference to the ILO MNE Declaration and the Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work.

Tokyo 2020 has launched a webpage featuring its partnership with the ILO. Presented as one of their major initiatives in promoting sustainability through the 2020 Games, the new webpage provides information on the collaboration as well as ILO resource materials and tools to support the Games’ delivery partners in implementing socially responsible labour practices.
