ProAgro Ethiopia Sector & Region Selection Study

Prioritising potential in eight agriculture sectors

This report serves as a sector and region selection study for the ProAgro Ethiopia project, a project designed within the framework of the BMZ’s Special Initiative on training and job creation. The project proposes an integrated strategy supporting the implementation of employment policies, skills development, development of agro-industrial value chains and entrepreneurship training. The ultimate objective of the ProAgro Ethiopia project is to create decent job opportunities for women and men in agro-industry.

With that backdrop, this report assesses potential in eight agriculture sectors in Ethiopia to support the project to narrow its implementation focus into high potential sectors. These sub-sectors were assessed through the review of secondary data and primary research and against three key criteria: relevance, opportunity and feasibility. Based on this analysis, the project prioritised three sectors for implementation - poultry, fruits and vegetables and edible oils – as well as two regions where it can have the most impact within implementation.
