COVID-19 and the insurance industry: Why a gender-sensitive response matters

On March 3, 2021, the ILO’s Impact Insurance Facility and IFC Women’s Insurance Program organized the webinar “COVID-19 and the insurance industry: Why a gender-sensitive response matters”.

This webinar looked at why a gender-sensitive response is critical as the industry responds to the COVID-19 pandemic. Research suggests that COVID-19 has widened gender gaps and impacted women’s risk profile, further increasing their protection gap and the need for insurance.

In this webinar, speakers from the IFC Women’s Insurance Program and the ILO’s Impact Insurance Facility introduced the topic and key points from IFC’s guidance note, produced with support from the Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative (We-Fi). We heard from InLife Health Care (part of Insular Life) in the Philippines about how they have put best practice on serving the women’s market and responding to their changing needs in light of the pandemic into action. We also invited commentary from South African based think-tank, Cenfri, as they highlighted how the industry can better consider the needs of women.

Presenters: Maria Noemi G. Azura (Executive Vice President, Seconded as President and CEO of Insular Health Care, Inc. and Program Director, InLife Sheroes), Craig Churchill (Chief, the ILO’s Social Finance Programme), Sarah Ebrahimi (Operations Officer, IFC Women’s Insurance Program) and Jeremy Gray (Resilience Team Lead, Cenfri). Moderator: Lisa Morgan (Technical Officer, the ILO's Impact Insurance Facility).
