Comments and Observations: | International Chamber of Shipping (15 November 2022) Regarding the more recent Archimedes case, they explained that it’s also a fishing vessel, although the ILO database doesn’t indicate that. In this case, they’ve suggested that the shipowner ran into financial difficulty due to COVID-19 and high repair and maintenance costs (incurred in Las Palmas, Spain), rendering them unable to pay the wages due to the seafarers concerned. The crew left the ship in Mauritania around 2 May this year, with help from Russian seafarer representatives. Not entirely clear who borne the repatriation costs, but it seems to have been covered by the seafarers’ home country (Russia/Ukraine). Payment of wages is still an issue, but the shipowner is in contact with Angolan authorities.
