1. The Committee notes the Government’s statement contained in the report received in June 2006 indicating that, as a landlocked country, the conditions to implement the Convention in Afghanistan do not exist. In consultation with the different ministries and social partners, the Government intends to denounce the Convention.

2. The Committee further notes the observation by the National Union of Afghanistan Workers, forwarded with the Government’s report, indicating that, along the Amo River there is some seasonal port activity. The observation of the National Union also indicated that the Government should take measures to improve the social and political conditions of the portworkers.

3. The Committee notes that, since the ratification of the Convention, it has never been possible to examine a detailed report on its application. In view of the ongoing consultations, it invites the Government to provide the information requested in the report form on the Convention and to keep it informed of the denunciation of the Convention.
