    In addition to wages, governs working hours and overtime, holidays, annual leave, sick leave and termination of contracts of employment (inter alia); prohibits employment of any person under the age of 15 or any woman four weeks prior to or eight weeks following confinement.

    Amends s. 26 of the Conditions of Employment (South African Transport Services) Act 1983 so as to provide for steps which may be taken by the General Manager in case of an illegal strike (including termination of an employee's service) and inserts s. 32A in that Act for the purpose of achieving parity in service conditions for employees of all races. Also amends s. 1 and repeals s. 16 of the Railway and Harbours Pensions for Non-Whites Act 1974 for the purposes of having parity in pension benefits for all races. In addition, amends ss. 4 and 9 of the South African Transport Service Act 1981 regarding other functions.

    Government Notice No. R. 2424: Exemption from the application of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act 1983 and Wage Act 1957.

    The decision refers to the special work-creation programme announced in October 1985. Employers engaging persons in approved projects under the programme are exempted from compliance with the basic conditions of employment as regards minimum wages, annual and sick leave, piece work and commission work and termination of employment. The decision was taken by the Director-General for Manpower.

    Act to amend the Basic Conditions of Employment Act 1983 [LS 1983 - SA 1], so as to further define "public holiday" and "wage"; to provide that notice of termination of service during the first four weeks of service shall in the case of a written contract of employment be given in accordance with such contract; to make the non-payment or underpayment of wages an offence; to exclude from the prohibition on deductions from employees' remuneration the setting-off against such remuneration of amounts owed by an employee to his employer; and to effect certain textual improvements; and to provide for incidental matters.
