Its task is to ensure the observance of legislation on the working environment and hours of work, especially regarding chemical control of pesticides. Furthermore, it is to provide information and advice for ameliorating the working environment. Provisions also regulate the administration of the Fund.

It covers, inter alia, seaworthiness, loading, passenger ships, manning, working environment, responsibilities in relation to the working environment and protective measures and safety precautions on ships. Repeals Act No. 719 of 1965 on the same subject.
