    Amends the Merchant Shipping Act (No. 44 of 1958) in various respects (ss. 3, 24, 102, 105, 108, 130, 132, 137, 141, 159, 160, 194, 204, 299A, 402, 434, 436). Amendments deal chiefly with the definition of "family", engagement of a seafarer outside India, amounts for seafarers' welfare, and compulsory insurance against their death or occupational injury. Inserts new s. 177A empowering the Central Government to make rules, in the light of ILO Convention No. 134 (Prevention of Accidents (Seafarers)), to ensure safe working conditions on board vessels.
