  ACUTE HAZARDS PREVENTION FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE & EXPLOSION Highly flammable. Many reactions may cause fire or explosion.  Vapour/air mixtures are explosive.  NO open flames, NO sparks and NO smoking. NO contact with oxidizing agents or incompatible substances. See Chemical Dangers.  Closed system, ventilation, explosion-proof electrical equipment and lighting. Do NOT use compressed air for filling, discharging, or handling.  Use water spray, powder, alcohol-resistant foam, carbon dioxide.  In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water. Combat fire from a sheltered position.

PREVENT GENERATION OF MISTS! AVOID ALL CONTACT! IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
  SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID
Inhalation Sore throat. Burning sensation behind the breastbone. Cough. Shortness of breath. Symptoms may be delayed. See Notes.  Use ventilation, local exhaust or breathing protection.  Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer immediately for medical attention.
Skin Redness. Burning sensation. Pain.  Protective gloves. Protective clothing.  First rinse with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, then remove contaminated clothes and rinse again. Refer immediately for medical attention .
Eyes Redness. Pain. Burns. Watering of the eyes.  Wear face shield or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.  Rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible). Refer immediately for medical attention.
Ingestion Burning sensation. Nausea. Abdominal pain. Vomiting. Diarrhoea.  Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.  Rinse mouth. Give one or two glasses of water to drink. Refer immediately for medical attention.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL CLASSIFICATION & LABELLING
Evacuate danger area! Consult an expert! Personal protection: chemical protection suit including self-contained breathing apparatus. Remove all ignition sources. Ventilation. Do NOT absorb in saw-dust or other combustible absorbents. Do NOT wash away into sewer. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable non-plastic containers as far as possible. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent. Wash away remainder with plenty of water. Then store and dispose of according to local regulations.

CROTONALDEHYDE ICSC: 0241
PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL INFORMATION

Physical State; Appearance
COLOURLESS LIQUID WITH PUNGENT ODOUR. TURNS PALE YELLOW ON EXPOSURE TO LIGHT AND AIR.

Physical dangers
The vapour is heavier than air and may travel along the ground; distant ignition possible.

Chemical dangers
The substance can presumably form explosive peroxides. The substance may polymerize. This generates fire or explosion hazard. The substance is a strong reducing agent. It reacts violently with oxidants and many other substances. This generates fire and explosion hazard. Attacks plastics and many other substances.

EXPOSURE & HEALTH EFFECTS

Routes of exposure
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour, through the skin and by ingestion.

Effects of short-term exposure
Lachrymation. The vapour is severely irritating to the skin, eyes and respiratory tract. Inhalation of high concentrations may cause lung oedema. See Notes. Exposure far above the OEL could cause death.

Inhalation risk
A harmful contamination of the air can be reached very quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure
The substance may have effects on the liver and respiratory tract. This substance is possibly carcinogenic to humans.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS
TLV: 0.86 mg/m3 (ceiling value); (skin); A3 (confirmed animal carcinogen with unknown relevance to humans).
MAK: skin absorption (H); carcinogen category: 3; germ cell mutagen group: 3A

ENVIRONMENT
The substance is very toxic to aquatic organisms. It is strongly advised not to let the chemical enter into the environment.

NOTES
The occupational exposure limit value should not be exceeded during any part of the working exposure.
Rinse contaminated clothing with plenty of water because of fire hazard.
Check for peroxides prior to distillation; eliminate if found.
Crotonaldehyde is stabilized with water.
The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential.
The CAS number is for mixed isomers (CAS 4170-30-3, EC number 224-030-0). Other CAS numbers: 123-73-9 (trans isomer, EC number 204-647-1), 15798-64-8 (cis isomer).
