NEVER use a domestic-type vacuum cleaner to vacuum the substance, only use specialist equipment. Periodic medical evaluation of exposed workers is recommended. Crystalline materials, such as crystalline silica, produced from ceramic fibres when heated over 1000° C present a possibly increased risk of lung cancer to workers. The TLV value applies to fibres longer than 5µm with an aspect ratio equal to or greater than 3:1 as determined by the membrane filter method at 400-450X magnification (4-mm objective) using phase-contrast illumination. According to Directive 2017/2398, this EU-OEL applies for refractory ceramic fibers which are carcinogens within the meaning of point (i) of Article 2(a) of Directive 2004/37/EC: a substance or mixture which meets the criteria for classification as a category 1A or 1B carcinogen set out in Annex I to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council. The European Commission Scientific Committee on Occupational Exposure Limits classified refractory ceramic fibres as carcinogen group C (genotoxic carcinogens for which a practical threshold is supported.) |
